THE NEW VERA-YORDY VIRGIN QUEEN INTRODUCTION SYSTEM
|
In commercial queen rearing, bees are induced to develop queen larva from worker larva grafted into queen cell cups. The larva mature and are sealed off in a capped queen cell. This queen cell is then placed in an incubation colony and finally in a mating colony prior to emergence. Small nucleus colonies result in a higher percentage of accepted queen cells and mated queens. The introduction of the African small hive beetle has caused problems with this system, where they are present, because they ravage and destroy weak colonies. The only colonies able to resist the beetles and keep them in check are strong colonies. When queen cells are introduced to strong colonies, as many as 50% of the cells can be destroyed by the bees.
The VERA YORDY VIRGIN QUEEN INTRODUCTION CAGE is designed to alleviate this problem and to facilitate the mass production techniques of modern queen rearing. This cage protects the queen cell in a strong colony until the queen emerges. The queen can then be released in the same way that a mated queen is released from a queen cage.
What makes this cage different from the present hair roller cage is that queen cells in their plastic cups can easily be snapped into the base and the cage snapped over them. Ten cages can then be wracked under the grooved top bar of a frame and the frame of caged queen cells can then be held in the incubator until placed in the stronger mating colony. In the mating colony, the cage can be inserted between the top bars of the frames in much the same way that a mini queen cage is inserted in a colony. The virgin queen can then be released from the cage by removing a cork from the release hole or by inserting a sugar candy tube or a mini marshmallow in the release hole for the bees to remove. Virgin queens may also be allowed to emerge from the queen cells while in an incubator or incubator colony, and then only viable queens placed in the mating colonies. This will result in a higher percentage of mated queens than what is now being realized under current techniques.

The biggest problem with inserting queen cells in mating nucs is that immature or unhatched queens are damaged in the handling and transport process, with a 20% loss being the norm. Use of the VERA YORDY VIRGIN QUEEN INTRODUCTION SYSTEM and the introduction of emerged virgins will put your acceptance and mating rate closer to 100%.
This system is great where artificial insemination is being used because the virgin queen is redily available and unable to destroy other unhatched queens. These cages are also great for holding surplus cells & queens until you have room for them.
The VERA YORDY VIRGIN QUEEN INTRODUCTION CAGE is a two part reusable cage manufactured with food grade plastic. To be used with JZ-BZs cell cups and standard mini queen cage candy tubes.
